Mellemrum
A site-specific festival at Nørrebro, Copenhagen
13th-30th of May 2010
Join X-act for an extraordinary tour of Nørrebro! The MELLEMRUM guides will take you through the known and unknown, hidden and forgotten parts of the neighbourhood to a selection of performances made specifically for a number of chosen urban spaces. During three weekends in May, MELLEMRUM will present a total of 9 performances by artists from Denmark and abroad, as well as 12 local Nørrebro children.
The first MELLEMRUM festival in the inner city of Copenhagen, May 2008, was a real audience magnet with sold-out tours, extra performances and overwhelmingly positive responses that resulted in a nomination for ’Best Theatre Experience of the Year’ at the popular cultural site aok.dk
This time the festival takes place at Nørrrebro – the Northern part of the city – and will be more rooted in the local environment. While the inner city with its stores, offices and monuments can be said to be common property, Nørrebro is on local hands – it is a ’territory’. For this reason the site-specific artistic process will here be based, not just on the physical reality of the neighbourhood, but on a direct dialogue with its inhabitants. A dialogue which will be cross-cultural due to Nørrebro’s cultural and ethnical multiplicity.
MELLEMRUM/nørrebro’s artistic participants are a mix of ‘new’, ‘old’ and ‘exiled’ Danes as well as 3 foreigners – all with backgrounds in the dance, performance and visual arts scene.
Also a group of local children – with a variety of ethnical backgrounds - will be part of MELLEMRUM/nørrebro. They will be creating a site-specific performance based on their own personal stories, guided by two of the professional artistic participants.
MELLEMRUM/nørrebro takes place during the last 3 weekends of May 2010. Thursday to Sunday, with 2 identical tours per day. Each tour presents 3 performances that are the same throughout the weekend.
